Non-suicidal self-injury is the intentional self-cutting, bruising or burning without suicidal intent. Our research finds that about 1/5 young people (adolescent or young adult) engage in self-injury to try to cope with difficult emotions/thoughts and manage stress. SiOS is an international non-profit outreach organization we founded in 2012 with Dr. Stephen Lewis’ team at University of Guelph. SiOS provides recovery oriented current information and helpful resources about non-suicidal self-injury to individuals who self-injure, as well as their families, friends, partners, teachers and the health professionals who work with them. It has been accessed in over 165 countries, has approximately 2,500 visits monthly and has received significant media attention. Visit SiOS at sioutreach.org.
